William "Bill" Horton Obituary - 2022 (2024)

ELWOOD, IN -William (Bill) Horton, 72, passed unexpectedly in his home in Elwood on December 21, 2022, after a brief illness.

Bill was born March 22, 1950, to Walter and Marguerite Horton. Bill was a 1968 graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School and a retired Navy veteran. Bill spent his Navy career stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and Rota, Spain. Throughout his lifetime Bill was employed by Delco Remy in Anderson, Red Gold in Orestes and for several years spent time learning the skilled trade of “moving houses.” He was an avid Harley Davidson fan in his younger years and as a family, if we speak honestly, we will have to say there probably wasn’t a fence or a piece of pavement he didn’t like. He was quite accident prone throughout his lifetime. Bill was also part of the custom van mural phase from back in the 1970’s, he would have been seen quite regularly driving around the streets of Alexandria. Bill loved football and was a huge fan of the IndyCar Series.

Bill devoted the later part of his years helping with the care of his young granddaughters after the death of their mother, Jacinda. Their “Pa Paw” will be missed dearly.

Bill is survived by a son Kelly Phillips (Greenwood), three granddaughters, Torren Fields (Muncie), Emma and Faith Howard (Yorktown), four great grandchildren, Aandon, Kyrie, Emberly and Salem, a sister Lyssa Dowden, Alexandria, a niece, Lori Dowden, Houston, Texas and a nephew Jeff Dowden, Alexandria.

Bill was preceded in death by his daughter Jacinda Horton in 2010 and parents, William and Marguerite Horton of Alexandria

Services honoring Bill’s life will take place at 12 pm on Friday, March 3, 2023 with Chaplain Rob Mifflin officiating. Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home, 412 North Harrison Street, Alexandria after 11am prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Owens Funeral Home to assist the family with final expenses or to the Madison County Humane Society.
