3 Tips for Making Delicious Frozen Grapes with Jello

If you’re looking for a unique and refreshing treat, frozen grapes coated in jello are a yummy option! This simple treat is perfect for summer gatherings, parties, or simply as a sweet snack to enjoy at home. Here are three tips to ensure your frozen grapes with jello turn out perfectly every time.

1. Choose the Right Grapes

When selecting grapes for this recipe, opt for seedless varieties like red or green seedless grapes. They provide a pleasant burst of flavor while maintaining their texture when frozen. It’s tempting to splurge and use Cotton Candy grapes, assuming they’ll be the most flavorful. But, in my experience, they taste just like regular green grapes when frozen. So save yourself a few bucks and skip the novelty grapes.

2. Wash and Dry Thoroughly

Before coating the grapes in jello mix, it’s important to wash them thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or pesticides. Afterward, pat them gently using paper towels. There should be a little moisture left on the grapes, so that the Jell-O mix will stick well. But too much water on the skins of the grapes will create the opposite effect– the dry mix will slide right off!

3. Coat Grapes Evenly

To achieve an even coating of jello mix on each grape, it’s best to work in small batches rather than coating them all at once. Use a toothpick to coat each grape individually. However, this method isn’t necessary if you aren’t concerned with an even coating on each grape. I usually toss it all in a Ziploc bag, seal it up, shake, freeze, and then enjoy them right out of the bag!

Ingredients

  • one pound of grapes, rinsed
  • 1 box sugar-free Jell-O mix (dry)

Instructions

The amount of Jell-O mix you use in proportion to the amount of grapes you have is pretty much up to you. So far I’ve discovered that I like WAY MORE Jell-O in my grapes that I would have guessed. Generally, I use about 3 boxes of Jell-O to a bunch of grapes (it's a lot-- similar recipes I've seen don't call for this much, haha).

  1. Pluck all the grapes from their vine and rinse them in a colander. Transfer the still-damp grapes to a gallon size Ziploc bag. Pour the Jell-O mix into the bag, seal and shake until grapes are coated.
  2. Freeze overnight (8-10 hours). Keep frozen.
  3. To make a variety of colors as I have pictures, simply divide grapes into separate bags and add a different flavor Jell-O mix into each bag. Freeze separately and then combine once frozen.
  4. Shaking in a bag is the fastest, easiest, cleanest way to make this recipe. However, if you want the grapes to be as evenly coated as you see pictured: pour Jell-O mix into a bowl, and roll each individual grape in the mix using a toothpick

Frozen Grapes FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re a grape lover, you’ve probably heard about the trend of freezing grapes for a refreshing and healthy snack. But before you jump on the bandwagon, it’s natural to have questions. That’s why we’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about frozen grapes:

Why freeze grapes?

Freezing grapes is an easy way to transform them into a delightful treat with a unique texture and flavor. The firmness of frozen grapes offers a satisfying crunch similar to mini sorbets or popsicles. It's also a great alternative to high-calorie desserts or sugary snacks.

How do I freeze grapes properly?

To freeze grapes, wash them thoroughly under cold water and pat dry until they are completely moisture-free. Remove any stems or leaves from the bunch, then spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the tray in the freezer for at least two hours until they are solidly frozen.

Can I freeze any type of grape?

Yes! You can freeze any variety of grape—red, green, black, seedless—whatever your preference may be. Just ensure that they are fresh and ripe when you freeze them for the best taste.

Is there anything special I need to consider while freezing grapes?

Is there anything special I need to consider while freezing grapes? It's important not to overcrowd your baking sheet during freezing process; otherwise, they may stick together once frozen solidly. If you plan on storing them long-term after initial freezing (up to six months), transfer them into an airtight container or freezer bag for better preservation.

Are there any health benefits associated with eating frozen grapes?

Absolutely! Frozen grapes offer various health benefits just like their fresh counterparts do—they are low in calories but rich in fiber and antioxidants like resveratrol which can help boost heart health and reduce inflammation.

How long can I keep frozen grapes before they go bad?

When stored properly in an airtight container or freezer bag, frozen grapes can last up to six months.
